VOYAGE TO ITALY

For Art Basel Online Viewing Room, Lia Rumma Gallery is pleased to present a homage to Italy through a selection of works that celebrate and investigate the influence Italy and Italian culture on artists' thought and practice over time.

In this perspective, Italy is not presented as a mere geographical concept, but as a complex and stratified imaginary with which Italian and international artists have felt the need to engage and dialogue.

Over the centuries, the Bel Paese has been, in fact, the cradle of a unique and extraordinary civilization, rich in charm and beauty, fuelled by genius and passion, but certainly not without contradictions.

Perhaps it is also because of these contradictions that artists such as William Kentridge, Joseph Kosuth and also Thomas Ruff, Vanessa Beecroft, Marina Abramović (and many others) have found in Italy an imperishable source of inspiration.
It is this privileged relationship with Italian landscape and culture that has often led artists, invited by Lia Rumma, to leave an everlasting mark and an indelible memory of their passage.

The ancient vestiges of a grandiose empire, the genuine landscapes linked to images far away in time, the imposing architecture and the ever-changing colours and noises, have made Italy a faithful companion of artists.

Our Online Viewing Room presents works by Marina Abramović, Vanessa Beecroft, Victor Burgin, Enrico Castellani, Gino De Dominicis, Alfredo Jaar, Ilya&Emilia Kabakov, William Kentridge, Joseph Kosuth, Jannis Kounellis, David Lamelas, Reinhard Mucha, Ugo Mulas, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Thomas RuffEttore Spalletti and Gilberto Zorio
